Background of the Study
Digital language resources such as online dictionaries, language apps, and educational platforms are vital for the revitalization of indigenous languages. In Calabar, the Efik language faces challenges from declining speaker numbers and limited formal usage. Recent initiatives have focused on developing digital resources to document, teach, and promote Efik, aiming to rejuvenate its cultural significance (Obong, 2023). These resources leverage multimedia content, interactive exercises, and community forums to engage younger generations and preserve traditional expressions. Moreover, advancements in digital archiving and online learning technologies have enhanced access to linguistic materials, making Efik more accessible to both native speakers and language learners (Ukpong, 2024). Researchers emphasize that the success of these initiatives relies on the integration of culturally relevant content and user-friendly interfaces that resonate with the target community (Aniefiok, 2025). Despite the promising progress, challenges persist in ensuring the sustainability and continuous updating of these digital platforms. This study assesses the current state of digital language resources for Efik revitalization, exploring their effectiveness in preserving linguistic heritage and promoting language learning in Calabar.
Statement of the Problem
Although digital language resources for Efik are emerging, their overall impact on language revitalization in Calabar remains uncertain. Many platforms suffer from limited content, inadequate interactivity, and a lack of continuous community engagement (Obong, 2023; Ukpong, 2024). These shortcomings hinder efforts to revitalize Efik and may result in low adoption among younger users. Addressing these issues is crucial for creating sustainable and effective digital resources that can contribute to the long-term preservation and promotion of the Efik language.
